Scottsdale RC Challenge 2010 Race Report
The Scottsdale RC Challenge has been run and won for another year. The weather outlook wasn’t brilliant, but we managed to get a full race schedule in with not too many delays. Friday gave us very hot dry conditions, which tested drivers and their machinery, with a brief light shower in the evening to make things more interesting. Saturday’s proceedings where delayed for around 1 hour due to an early morning shower, leaving the track extremely wet. Once the hot north east sun popped through the clouds, the track dried quickly and we were able to get the meeting under way.
Entries were well down compared to previous years, possibly due to the V8 Supercars event clashing with the show, and also the average weather forecast leading into this years challenge. Those who did attend put on a great display of skilful and close racing, and everyone had a great time, with large crowds of spectators watching the racing all weekend, cheering on their favourite cars. In between races there was enough time to check out the many show attractions (such as Scotty G’s donkeys ) It would be great to see a few more drivers attended this awesome event next year, and make it an even greater experience for the racers and the spectators.
I would like to thank the dedicated racers that attended this event from around the state, and also the guys who helped with the lap counting and timing through out the weekend. Also a special Thankyou goes to Tiger Models and Hobbies for supplying the awesome trophies for this event. If you need any RC gear or general hobby supplies, drop in and see Hans or Dwaine at Tiger Models and Hobbies. Again a big Thankyou to all who attended and helped with this race meeting, with out all of your support, events like this would never happen.
1/10th Nitro Tourers
Andrew Eberheart set the early pace on Friday with his trusty Kyosho, running a new engine for this year, taking out both heat wins and the Final on Friday, leaving Graham Viney and Ian Scott to battle out the minor placings, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Craig Higgs made the trip from Devonport and was the man to beat on Saturday, driving consistently fast and winning the next 3 finals leaving Andrew and Ian to battle out the minor placings. Graham Viney had engine problems with his Mugen and was unable to start on Saturday.
Craig struck electrical problems before the final race of the day, and was unable to start the race, leaving Andrew to cruise to an easy win, and Ian not far behind in second position. Andrews’s consistency gave him overall victory for the weekend, with Craig second, Ian a solid third and Graham fourth. Andrew has been attending this event for several years running in the Nitro Tourers class, and has been getting closer to a win each year, and this year he took a deserving win with a brilliant display of consistent driving and finishing every race.
Mini
The minis were down on numbers this year, with only 2 entries for Friday, and 4 on Saturday, but the racing was still very entertaining with tires squealing and plenty of traction roles. Rodney Houghton (Rocket) dominated the Friday heats with Graham close behind. Friday night’s final started on a very slippery track after a light shower, and Rockets powerful mini was not behaving at all. Graham was able to drive away to an easy victory and nearly put a lap on Rocket in the slippery conditions.
Saturday had the very fast Hobart drivers Lethal Lee Harvey and Kim Dare front the starter, and straight away Lee set a very hot pace in the first race of the day, easily blowing off Rocket, with Graham third and Kim fourth.
Lee made an early mistake in the next race, and Rocket was able to sneak away and hang on for a narrow win, but his mini was not sounding healthy, Lee coming home hard in second, Graham third and Kim fourth.
In the 4th race, Lee was able to cruise away to an easy win; with Rockets Mini finally deciding it had enough punishment for the weekend and in the last few laps the gear box let go, limping home in second, graham third and Kim fourth.
The last race of the day, Lee only had to finish to take the honors for the weekend, but he easily took the victory, Graham second, Kim Fourth, and Rocket struggling with his spare car in a distant fourth. Lee took a deserving win for the weekend, Rocket second, Graham a strong and consistent third, and Kim fourth.
Short Course Trucks
The Short course trucks were spectacular to watch, with plenty of power slides, body roll and lots of biff and barge. 5 trucks made it to the start line for a very entertaining weekend of racing. Rocket set the pace on Friday taking heat wins and Friday nights final, with Sam Wells looking very racy in second, Josh Fogerty third, Ian Scott fourth and James Atkinson fifth.
Saturday’s slippery conditions seemed to suit Sam, who drove exceptionally well, taking the win in the first race, Rocket second, Josh third, James fourth and Ian fifth. Sam again dominated the next race, with Rocket chasing hard until his transmitter batteries died, with Josh taking second, Ian having a very good run in third, James fourth, and Rocket at the rear of the pack.
Josh came out hard in the 4th race, driving very well taking a dominate win, leaving left Sam and Rocket in his wake battling for second and third, with Ian fourth and James fifth.
The final race of the day, Sam cruised to victory, Josh still flying with new found confidence in a strong second, Rocket struggling in third, and the battle for 4th and fifth for the weekend was running hit between Ian and James, with Ian eventually taking fourth and James fifth.
After a very hectic and entertaining weekend of racing from the SC Truck brigade, Sam took a well earned win, Josh putting in a strong run for second, Rocket third, and the hot battle for fourth place eventually going to Ian, and James fifth.
Stock tourers
The stock tourer class had 6 drivers entered, and was the closest and hardest fought race for the weekend, with the final results only being decided in the last race of the weekend. Rocket set the early pace taking the first win with his sorted Yokomo, with Sam having electrical problems with his Schumacher in Friday nights final and not finishing, Josh putting in a good drive for second and Graham Viney third.
Sam had his Schumacher flying in Saturday’s first race and took the win with a strong drive, Rocket close behind in second, Lethal Lee chasing hard in third, Kim Dare fourth, Josh fifth and Graham Viney sixth.
Rocket got the jump in the 3rd race and set a good gap on the field, with Sam and Lee battling close for second and third, Kim and Josh fighting over fourth and fifth. Rocket took the win, with Lee eventually slipping past Sam for second, Kim fourth and Josh fifth, with Graham striking problems not finishing.
Sam set a fast pace in the 4th race, taking the win, with Rocket holding off a hard charging Lee for second, Kim fourth and Josh fifth. This set up a cracker of a final race for the weekend, with both Sam and Rocket needing to win the last race to take the overall honors for the meeting.
In the final race Sam got the jump off the line and lead the way with Rocket right on his tail for much of the first half of the race, with Sam edging away slightly mid race, Lee chasing hard in third. Rocket was pushing hard and started to close the gap, when he blinked and made a mistake, leaving him stuck in the grass on turn one, and Lee was also struggling with handing issues. Sam took a strong win, Rocket second, Lee third, Kim fourth and Josh fifth.
Sam took the overall win for the weekend with a great display of smooth consistent driving, with Rocket only 3 points behind in second, Lee third, Josh a well deserved fourth in his first TC outing, Kim fifth and Graham sixth.
1/8 Electric off road(Big Bangers)
The 1/8th big bangers were low on numbers, but were spectacular to watch speeding and wheel spinning down the long straight and through the tight infield sections of the Scottsdale lay out. Josh Fogerty was on fire all weekend with his Kyosho machine, taking out the heat wins and clean sweeping all of the finals for a strong win. Peter Hutton had his Associated Pro Short course truck flying in second place all weekend, but could not match the speed of Josh’s 4wd buggy through the tight stuff, with Ian Scott driving consistently and getting his Kyosho buggy sorted out coming home in third position.
